Guided reading occurs in small group settings where the teacher is able to focus on the individual needs of the emergent reader. The goal in the end is to enhance the readers comprehension.

This website lists skills and strategies to focus on along with leveling books.
http://classroom.jc-schools.net/read/guidedr.html is another website I found helpful with ideas on guided reading activities for kinder and uppper grades.
